He is a Professor of Medicine at Marmara University Medical School in Istanbul, Türkiye. He is married and has one son. He is head of the Rheumatology and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) Departments. He is the head of the Sports Medicine Division. He has three specializations: rheumatology, PMR, and algology.
He graduated from Istanbul University, Istanbul Medical School, in 1987, then moved to Paris, France, where he stayed for 9 years to receive specialized training in Rheumatology and PMR at Cochin and Raymond Poincaré Hospitals.
Dr. Duruöz is a member of the National Rheumatology Training Commission (TUKMOS), ASAS (The Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society), GRAPPA (Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis), and the Development Group for Rheumatoid Arthritis for the development of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Package of Interventions for Rehabilitation (PIR). He is the founder of the Turkish Ankylosing Spondylitis Patient Society (ASHAD) and the president of the Istanbul Branch of the Turkish League Against Rheumatism (TLAR). He has been a member of the executive committee of the Axial Spondyloarthritis International Federation (ASIF) since 2009, and he has been chair of the ASIF Executive Advisory Committee (EAC) since 2024.
He received the Young Researcher's Award from OMERACT in 2000 in Toulouse, France. He is a board member and reviewer of some international rheumatology journals.
He is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters. His H-index is 33, and his scientific papers have more than 4500 citations on Google Scholar. He is the editor of the book named "Hand Function: A Practical Guide to Assessment" (Springer-New York, 2014, 2nd edition 2019, the 3rd edition will be completed in 2 months).
An experienced lecturer, Dr. Duruöz has given numerous oral and poster presentations at more than 200 meetings at the national and international levels. He has delivered numerous lectures on rheumatic diseases in several countries.
He developed a functional disability index for hand arthropathies, which is called the "Duruöz Hand Index (DHI)". It was translated into more than 10 languages and validated for many hand conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and geriatric hand.
Dr. Duruöz has been an investigator in many clinical trials, mainly focused on hand function, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, low back pain, and outcome measures. He has been organizing "Dermato-Gastro-Rheumatology Update Summit" meetings annually in Istanbul since 2020.
