Senior surgeon with more than 35 years of experience in high-complexity general surgery, with particular expertise in colon-proctology, colorectal oncology, pelvic floor disorders, and emergency surgery. After a long academic and hospital career at Sapienza University of Rome and Policlinico Umberto I, he currently serves as Director of the Colonproctology Unit at Casa di Cura Pio XI in Rome. He is actively involved in clinical practice, research, teaching, and international scientific activity, and is the author of more than 140 scientific publications.
Over the past decade, Professor Mongardini has developed a focused and increasingly recognized expertise in coccygeal and sacrococcygeal surgery, including coccygectomy and selected sacral resections performed primarily for neoplastic disease and, secondarily, for complex functional disorders. This field of activity has evolved within a multidisciplinary clinical framework in close collaboration with neurosurgeons, particularly for pathologies arising from or involving the sacral and coccygeal region. He has presented and discussed this experience at national and international scientific meetings in Italy, Mexico, China, and the United States, and has delivered recurring postgraduate teaching on these topics. Because of the highly selected nature of this field and the limited statistical power of most available series, additional dedicated publications are currently in preparation.
